Trekking in Garhwal

Garhwal lying in the north -west of Himalayas in Uttarakhand comprises of the districts Dehradun, Pauri, Tehri, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Hardawar and Chamoli.

Any one can trudge through any of the districts. But what remains common all over is the breathtaking panorama of misty mountainscape,

deepgropes, alpine meadows & dense forests with towering deodars - unmatched vistas that come alive especially at dawn or dusk. No wonder, even the Gods were mesmerised by its gugged enchantment. Their divine footprints arnow lovely temples & ashrams. The sacred places Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri & Yamunotri are located here and so are the source of the most venerated rivers Ganga & Yamuna.

Garhwal is the mecca for adventure sports - from Skiing, Rafting to Trekking to Mountain Climbing & Aero Sports. There is ample scope for Wildlife watching also making it an essantial on the itinery of adventure lovers, pleasure seekers & pilgrim alike.

The legendry valleys of Garhwal abound with natural beauty and also offer a distinct style of hill temple architecture & delightful handicrafts.

The archaeological remains lying scatterd at many places reveal that a rich civilization flourished here from very early times. The mahabharata gives vivid accounts of the land and its people.

Emperor Ashoka's domain encompassed a part of the terrain , evidence of which is "chitrashila" or "chhatrashila", a quartz rock bnearing his edicts, discoverd near kalsi.

Hieun tsang, the 7th century chyinese pilgrim traversed a part of the garhwal and adi shankaracharya, the 8th century hindu saint and reformer, visited the remotest regions and to him we owe the establishment of some of the most sacred shrines of garhwal.
